Brendan Sloan - Convulsing, Dumbsaint, Altars
By virtue of being the particular kind of freak that plays aluminium instruments, I became familiar with Till and his (then Haven) pickups a few years ago during his time working with Baguley guitars. I was struck by the novel approach to construction, use of 3d printing, and the general “futurist” aesthetic that dovetails quite nicely with the general attitude of guitars made from aluminium. Years later. while searching for a builder who might make me something to spec/drop-in as a replacement set for an Electrical Guitar Company 7 String, Till came up again - now out on his own as Nova. Given his history with aluminium I felt like he was an obvious choice to understand the conceits of such a thing, so I immediately sent off an email and we worked closely together for a few weeks refining the details of fitment and voicing. The results were beyond my expectations in the best way possible.
They’re unquestionably among the best passive pickups ever made by human hands. Extremely “hi-fi” sounding, wide range, detailed, clear… yet integrated and solid feeling. On an already very lively instrument I didn’t think I’d have an experience that’d feel even livelier, like the entire guitar was the pickup. Simply a pure representation of the instrument, with a quality and character all their own. A marvel.
I’m eager to experiment with more sets in other guitars - the trouble is that I play mostly 7 strings and the only set that I have are one of a kind! Guess I’ll need to order a few dozen more…
Gear (for now):
Electrical Guitar Company Series Two 7 String Semi-hollow Aluminium Guitar with custom spec omnia set [Apex variant].
