Flux, Apex, FRFR - the different variants explained
What's with the variants?
The Omnia lines are available in different variants, each one taylored to a specific purpose.
For us, it's important to provide an option for any usecase and while having options is great it can bring some confusion to the table, hence this blog post.
Passive variants: Flux and Apex
The passive variants are labeled Flux and Apex.
Flux is the "ideal" imagination of the Omnia - for guitars and bass - providing a transparent and dynamic pickup with lots of clarity, capable of tasty clean tones with that certain sparkle reverbs love so much, but also able to drive an amp into saturation and, with a little tweaking - high gain stuff.
Speaking of - the Apex concept is aimed towards high gain application. Too much clarity can quickly turn into harshness if boosed rigorously, which is why we created the Apex series aimed at people who enjoy high gain tones or darker voicings in general, without losing the perks of a high dynamic range and the transparency of the Omnia series.
All bass pickups are done with the Flux concept in mind - in this case we aim for the capability of translating the "metal" sounding overtones without getting into glassy territory since that's our interpretation of a perfect bass tone baseline (pun intended).
The P-Bass model is an exception: Since this is intended as a dual voiced pickup where you access the two split options only, one of them is following the Flux concept while the other one is a darker, hotter one, clearly more in the Apex realms.
Active variant: Omnia FRFR
In close collaboration with a luthier partner we developed the FRFR variant - which on one hand offers a full range signal to beyond 20kHz to provide the full signal to manipulate with preamps (and pedals!), on the other hand keeping an eye on preamp headroom, which is basically the dynamic range of a signal a preamp can handle without clipping. This is adapted to common 9V systems.
It's important to note that the pickups themselves are passive, but optimized to work with active preamps.
